BB buys $54m more to stabilise taka
Category: Economy·4 months ago
The Bangladesh Bank bought an additional $54 million from commercial banks to inject domestic currency into the banking system, aiming to stabilize the Taka and ease ongoing liquidity pressures. This latest market intervention brings the central bank's total greenback purchases to nearly $500 million over recent weeks. The strategy reflects a structural shift in monetary management: rather than defending the Taka by selling dollars—which previously depleted foreign exchange reserves—the central bank is now leveraging robust remittance inflows and healthy export earnings to accumulate reserves while simultaneously addressing a tight domestic currency shortfall.
Paper profits, hidden losses: How seven banks disguised a Tk1.16 lakh crore loss under regulatory shield
Category: Banking·4 months ago
Independent audits reveal that seven listed lenders in Bangladesh—Islami Bank, Rupali Bank, Al-Arafah Islami Bank, Standard Bank, UCB, One Bank, and NRBC Bank—effectively masked a combined loss of roughly Tk1.16 lakh crore for FY25. Supported by central bank policy allowing them to defer mandatory bad-loan provisioning to avert a systemic shock, these institutions reported artificial paper profits. However, regulatory bans on dividend payouts during provision shortfalls have frozen investor returns, triggering automatic stock downgrades to the "Z" (junk) category and leaving the lenders entirely dependent on central bank lifelines.
Mutual Trust Bank re-fixes AGM, record date after BSEC nod for stock dividend
Category: Regulatory·4 months ago
Following regulatory approval from the Bangladesh Securities and Exchange Commission (BSEC) to issue bonus shares, Mutual Trust Bank PLC (MTB) has re-fixed its record date to June 22, 2026, and rescheduled its 27th Annual General Meeting (AGM) to July 23, 2026. The adjustment was required under central bank rules to secure BSEC clearance before formalising stock dividend distributions. The upcoming AGM will seek shareholder approval for the bank's financial statements and corporate agendas for the year ended December 31, 2025.
VAT on steel rods may rise by 10%
Category: Economy·4 months ago
The National Board of Revenue (NBR) is considering a 10 percent increase in the specific VAT on steel rods for the 2026-27 fiscal year, raising it from Tk2,000 to Tk2,200 per tonne. While designed to help hit ambitious revenue collection targets, industry insiders and developers warn that passing this tax burden down will inflate construction costs, threatening infrastructure projects and slowing down the real estate sector.
Remittance inflows top $3b for sixth month
Category: Economy·4 months ago
Bangladesh received $3.42 billion in remittances in May 2026, marking the sixth consecutive month that monthly inflows crossed the $3 billion threshold. Driven by increased formal-channel transfers ahead of Eid-ul-Azha and a 5% year-on-year growth in migrant worker outflows (exceeding 8 lakh between July and March), total remittances for the July–May period of FY26 surged 19% to $32.75 billion. This sustained growth has pushed gross foreign exchange reserves to $29.89 billion as of late May, helping buffer the economy against balance-of-payments pressures caused by rising global energy and fertilizer import costs.
